There was a time when founders could close their eyes, imagine the word “venture,” and see the same skyline: San Francisco, the Golden Gate, a WeWork in SoMa, and a dozen VCs sipping Blue Bottle coffee before 9 a.m. Capital flowed west to east like a one-way current, and everyone believed that to build something big, you had to live inside that current.

That world no longer exists.
